Signal
With a single signal, the difference in hardware effort still plays a minor role.
Signal control compared
Both approaches can control model railway signals reliably. The key difference is the hardware architecture: MobaLedLib distributes many lighting and signal functions through a central controller and serial LED bus, while classic digital systems rely more heavily on dedicated accessory and signal decoders.
Your layout. Your calculation.
Compare complete signal solutions: MobaLedLib with suitable signal models and shared control versus ready-made signals from other manufacturers including decoder. Adjust every amount to match your own offers.
62.1% lower costs with 10 signals
10 x (EUR 20.00 + EUR 5.00) + EUR 80.00 + EUR 0.00 = EUR 330.00
With these assumptions, the MobaLedLib solution is cheaper from 2 signals onwards.
Example calculation including the entered amounts. Shipping and any required digital command station are excluded on both sides. Working time is included only if entered as an additional cost. Actual savings depend on the layout and purchase prices.
The fundamental difference
The more signals and lighting functions you add, the more clearly the two concepts differ.
| Area | MobaLedLib | Classic digital control |
|---|---|---|
| Digital command station | Continue using an existing command station where supported, for example via DCC. | Digital command station as the central control and command instance. |
| Signal control | One MobaLedLib main board centrally handles the logic for many signals and other consumers. | Signal or accessory decoders provide the required physical outputs. |
| LED outputs | Serial WS281x / LED bus structure. Many LED channels are addressed in sequence. | Direct decoder outputs or dedicated signal modules. |
| Additional functions | The same infrastructure can also integrate lighting, servos, relays and sound. | Depending on the task, additional modules or decoders may be required. |
| Configuration | Freely configurable sequences and signal aspects using the MobaLedLib tools. | Configuration within the possibilities of the digital decoders used. |
| Typical focus | High flexibility and a large number of functions. | Standardised, modular digital technology. |
Example scaling
With a single signal, the difference in hardware effort still plays a minor role.
With several signals, the shared LED bus structure can reduce the need for individual output modules.
The number of functions grows without requiring separate central logic for every signal.
On large layouts, shared infrastructure for signals, lighting and other effects becomes especially interesting.
MobaLedLib capacity
According to the MobaLedLib documentation, as of August 2026, the classic MobaLedLib main board can manage up to four LED strands. A total of up to 256 RGB LEDs is available. For the cost comparison, the number of identical signals is therefore the key figure; the number of signals depends on the signal model and the LEDs required per signal.
In addition to LEDs, functions such as servos, relays and sound can be integrated.
No either-or decision
An existing digital command station does not necessarily need to be replaced. Depending on the system, control commands can be passed to MobaLedLib through supported interfaces. MobaLedLib then handles the actual lighting and signal control.
Practical comparison
This requires more own configuration and a good understanding of wiring and 5 V technology.
Depending on the decoder type, the number of required output modules can increase as signals and additional functions grow.
Conclusion
If you only want to control a few digital accessories, classic decoders provide a clear and manageable solution. With many signals, lights and additional effects, shared MobaLedLib infrastructure offers a high density of functions and flexibility.
It is especially useful that an existing digital command station can continue to serve as the user interface, depending on the system.

Flexibility or ready-made model?
| Decision | MobaLedLib + suitable signals | Ready-made signal from another manufacturer |
|---|---|---|
| Contents | Controller, LED driver and signal model are selected to work together. | Ready-made signal with its associated signal decoder. |
| Signal aspects | Configurable, depending on LEDs, wiring and signal model. | Hp00, Hp1, Hp2 and Hp0/Sh1 according to the product description. |
| Commissioning | Depending on the kit, soldering, assembly and configuration are required. | Ready-made model; connection and decoder configuration are still required. |
| Train control | Light signal control alone does not stop a train. If required, include additional relays or suitable control logic and their costs. | Connections for train control are available according to the product description. |
| Expansion | Shared infrastructure can also handle lights and other effects; check capacity and power supply. | Add another ready-made signal with its associated electronics. |
| It suits you if ... | ... you enjoy building, configuring flexibly and combining many functions. | ... you prefer a ready-made signal with clearly defined contents. |
Research: 5 October 2026. Retail prices and availability may change. MobaLedLib is a control project; the ready-made signal represents a specific product from another manufacturer. The calculator therefore adds signal models and infrastructure on the MobaLedLib side.
